Information for Study Away Parents

The prospect of watching your son or daughter board a plane to spend a semester, year, or even a summer in a foreign country may be quite nerve-racking. In fact, a study abroad colleague once said, "Deciding to study abroad is as big of a decision as deciding to go to college in the first place."

Yet the maturity, confidence, and skills that your child will gain from his/her experience will far outweigh your initial uneasiness. This guide aims to familiarize you with the study away process, and will help prepare you to support and encourage your student before, during, and after this important adventure.

First, a point that cannot be overemphasized: it is essential that parents communicate with their students about their study away plans. The office of Study Away Programs at Missouri State University works extensively with all students preparing to go abroad. From the logistical aspects of studying away (finances, academics, health, and safety) to the cultural and emotional ones, Study Away Programs will help students arrange the details of their study away experience. However, your student is also responsible for making sure their study away preparations are in order.

That being said, we encourage you to speak with your students about questions you may have, and to review the resources provided on our website. If you still have questions, we invite you to contact us via email at, or by phone at 417-836-6368.
