Program Name |
Archaeology Field School in Jordan |
Instructor |
Program purpose |
This course gives students hands-on, practical experience in archaeological fieldwork abroad. It, moreover, is the first effort to build on the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding signed by our university and Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, which will be the foundation for future students and faculty exchanges and related programs in Jordan. It provides a unique opportunity for students to be intensively involved with the local communities and participate in a “live” research project. It fulfills a real need among our students in anthropology, history, and religious studies, in particular for a living and research abroad experience in the Middle East, replacing the former archaeological excavation once offered in Oman. Today, this will be the only study away program of MSU in Jordan and the only excavation abroad this coming summer. As this faculty member is the director of the two archaeological projects that constitute the program, it is guaranteed that it will be running nearly every summer from 2010. The program, moreover, gives our Arabic language students the opportunity to use and develop their language skills in an applied setting, as we live and work long hours in local communities. For history, it is an initial step in furthering our initiatives in public history. The skills learned in the field are those that can be applied to a variety of related jobs in the US as the students will learn to keep detailed field records, learn some Arabic, develop drafting and surveying skills, and learn to live abroad in a setting that is unique for study away programs. |
