What is English for Musicians?

English for Musicians is an innovative program that gives international musicians the opportunity to learn English for advanced studies in music with MSU music professors. This program combines music-specific terminology with the advanced reading, writing, and research skills needed to pursue a graduate degree in music.

Why Pursue an Online Version of the English for Musicians Program?

This is a special and unique opportunity for international musicians to start the English for Musicians program from the distance. Successful completion of all the class components for the Online English for Musicians course waives the TOEFL exam for all incoming MSU students. Successful completion of one of the class components will count for partial completion of the English for Musicians course.

 

Class Components

This online course has 16 hours of classes per week for 16 weeks for a total of 256 hours of instruction.

Participants may choose to enroll in the entire course which will include the following components (16 hours per week):

  • Reading, Writing and Grammar (5 hours)
  • Speaking and Listening (5 hours)
  • Music History (3 hours)
  • Music Theory (3 hours)

*Successful completion of all the class components for the Online English for Musicians course waives the TOEFL exam for all incoming MSU students

Partial Credit: Participants may also opt for enrolling only in the History/Theory component, OR only in the Reading, Writing, Grammar/Speaking and Listening components.

*Successful completion of either of these components will count for partial completion of the English for Musicians course.

Language Requirements and Prices

Minimum English proficiency level: Low intermediate or B1 (CEFR)

Cost (USD): 

  • All course components:  $3,000
  • Speaking and Listen only: $1,000
  • Reading Writing and Grammar only: $1,000
  • Music History only: $500
  • Music Theory only: $500
  • Audit: $1,500

Audit students: Access to course material but you will not submit assignments and does not substitute for TOEFL or admission to MSU.
