Federal changes affecting F-1 and J-1 status

We recognize that changes to federal immigration policy can create uncertainty and stress for international students, scholars and their families. Missouri State University is committed to providing clear information, connecting members of our international community with the resources they need and supporting them throughout this change to the greatest extent we can.

The federal government has issued a final rule that will change how F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors and their dependents are admitted to and maintain status in the United States. The rule is scheduled to take effect on Sept. 15, 2026. 

Under the new rule, many F-1 and J-1 visitors will receive a specific expiration date on their Form I-94 instead of being admitted for “duration of status,” or D/S. The rule also introduces a maximum four-year admission period in many cases, changes the process for extending a stay and reduces the F-1 grace period from 60 days to 30 days. It also places new limits on some program changes, transfers and academic progression.

The effect of the rule will depend on each person’s immigration documents, program timeline, travel and individual circumstances. Most students and scholars do not need to take immediate action.
