Information for Departments
J-1 exchange visitor professors and research scholars may be authorized to participate in an Exchange Visitor Program for the length of time necessary to complete the program providing the program does not exceed five years.
J-1 short-term scholars are limited to a maximum of six months. Below are the necessary and required documents for requesting a DS-2019 for a J-1 scholar.
A department requesting an exchange visitor should complete and return the attached form, along with
- Completed and Signed DS-2019 Request Form (non-Missouri campuses, contact International Services)
- Passport of Participant (and dependents, if applicable)
- CV of Participant
- Scholarship Letter, or Funding Source Proof
- Letter of Invitation from the Missouri State Department
After International Services receives these items, International Services may reach out to the scholar to determine their English proficiency is enough to conduct day-to-day business within the United States.
A DS-2019 will be generated at this point, and mailed to the Exchange Visitor. If the department is willing to pay for the cost of mailing rather than the participant, a FOAP number should also be included on the request form.
Orientation
International Services will provide an orientation for the incoming J-1 scholar about one month before arrival, and provide scholars with the J-1 Orientation book. In addition, they must report their arrival to International Services within 20 days to remain in status.
