Dr. April Mattix Foster

Dr. April Mattix Foster is an associate professor in the Teaching Culturally, Linguistically, Diverse and Exceptional Learners program at George Mason University.  She has a PhD in Language, Literacy, and Culture, and masters degrees in both Teaching and International Affairs.  Dr. Mattix Foster is a certified K-12 teacher, and has taught both domestically and internationally.  Dr. Mattix Foster has served as the Assistant Director of the Reading Center at the University of Pittsburgh and as an instructor for the University’s English Language Institute.  At Mason, she teaches courses in child development, language and social studies methods, issues of English language learning, collaboration and consultation, intercultural competency, and the International Baccalaureate.  Dr. Mattix Foster’s work has also included overseeing a grant on internationalization of teacher preparation, multiple program evaluations, and coordinating university-school collaborative projects. Her current research projects center on the use of children’s literature as a means to examine sociocultural perspectives and issues of intercultural competence development in elementary children. Dr. Mattix Foster is a 2017 recipient of the George Mason University Teaching Award and a 2018 and 2019 recipient of Teacher of Distinction for Online Teaching Excellence.
