Plan Your Program
Where can you lead a program?
Programs can be led nearly anywhere. We encourage you to consider the Department of State Travel Advisory level for your host country before deciding on it as a destination. Countries at Level 3 or above will require a petition to be submitted by the program director(s) and reviewed by the Education Abroad Advisory Committee.
Consider working with Education Abroad Coordinator, Morgan Marler, to decide on a location. Locations should link directly with the academic content and ideally will not overlap with another program running in the same year.
How does the travel align with the academics?
Academics are the heart of an Education Abroad program and therefore are the most important aspect other than Health and Safety.
The Education Abroad program proposal is designed to act as an integrated syllabus. All programs are reviewed and approved by the respective department and college before any further steps are taken with the program.
Program Directors can decide which (and how many) courses they offer on their program. A general theme should be adhered to, and the program should achieve the academic goals of all courses they offer.
If you need assistance finding courses for your program outside of your home department,
work with Education Abroad Coordinator, Morgan Marler.
IDS 297/397 and UHC 350 are great course options we highly recommend all faculty consider
for their programs
When:
Education Abroad programs generally occur over winter break, spring break, the summer semester, or fall break. Even if a program is leaving after graduation, programs with May departure dates will be considered a Spring semester program.
Who:
All first-time program directors are required to either work with a program provider
or lead the program with a co-director. Otherwise, it is at the program director’s
discretion whether or not they lead a program with a program provider.
There are many benefits to leading a program with a program provider, including:
The Handbook for Faculty-Directed Education Abroad Programs includes specific guidance for each phase of program direction:
