Education Abroad Appeals Policy
Students requesting to participate in education abroad who do not meet Missouri State University’s eligibility requirements may request an academic appeal based on the following guidelines. Students may appeal the 2.5 GPA minimum if their GPA is no lower than 2.0. Students may appeal the 30 credit hour minimum requirement if they are enrolled at Missouri State University at the time of application.

Requirements for students with a GPA below the required 2.5 for semester/yearlong programs or below 2.0 for faculty-directed programs
- Apply to a specific Education Abroad program
- Submit One Personal Statement
- Student must write an essay for the Education Abroad Appeals committee explaining
why grades in previous semesters were low. It is important for the student to address
what they have learned about prioritizing their academic goals and how the student
will work to raise their GPA in the semester(s) prior to their departure.
- Additionally, the student must present a justification for their study abroad experience.
- The essay must include the student’s M number and a current email address for the committee’s response.
- Students must submit their statement by email to Education Abroad Advisor Amy Huff at AmyHuff@MissouriState.edu before the deadline.
- Student must write an essay for the Education Abroad Appeals committee explaining

- The student must ask two faculty members to write a letter of recommendation supporting the student’s eligibility to appeal the Education Abroad eligibility requirements. The letters should include information about the student’s work ethic and why they are a good candidate to study abroad.
- Letters must also be submitted to Education Advisor Amy Huff at AmyHuff@MissouriState.edu before the deadline. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate the deadline and nature of the request to the supporting faculty member.
Requirements for students with less than 30 credit hours of university course work for semester and yearlong programs
- Apply to a specific Education Abroad Program
- Submit One Personal Statement
- If the appeal is based on a desire to study abroad prior to reaching the 30 credit hour minimum, the student must present a justification for their proposed study abroad program.
- The essay must include the student’s M number and a current email address for the committee’s response.
- Students must submit their statement by email to Education Abroad Advisor Amy Huff at AmyHuff@MissouriState.edu before the deadline.

- Fall and Summer Semester Deadline — March 1
- Spring Semester Deadline — November 1
Committee decision process
Within two weeks of the deadline, the Education Abroad Appeals Committee will review the student’s transcript, advising notes, and appeals materials. The committee will rate the student’s appeal on a rubric and decide on the merit of the student’s appeal.
The Education Abroad Academic Appeals Committee will reach a consensus and a response will be emailed to the student within one week of the committee meeting.
