Transcultural Healthcare in Ecuador

Program purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide students a cultural immersion experience through: 1) formal daily classroom Spanish language instruction at the Academia Latinoamericana de Espanol; 2) experience living with an Ecuadorian host family, 3) medical service learning by visiting a variety of clinics, and acute care hospitals led by a health care provider, and engaging in lectures on the topic, 4) visits to a variety of urban and rural sites and areas, important to the history of Ecuador, with local guides, and 5) interaction with other education abroad students at the Academia from around the world. Graduate students taking the course for graduate credit will be required to complete a scholarly paper contrasting the health and health care of Ecuador with that of the United States, as well as factors affecting health and health care.

What is not included? tuition, $40 for white lab coat fee, and $100 for ground transportation costs
